Care Services at St Raphael's Hospice

Home Care

First contact with the Hospice usually comes with a visit from one of the specialist Home Care nurses. The particular needs of the individual are assessed and there is also an opportunity to find out more about the services offered by the Hospice.

The Home Care team members are registered nurses with a community qualification and experience in symptom control. The team offers advice and on-going support for patient and family, as well as information regarding practical and financial concerns.

Patients remain under the care of their GP and hospital consultant - the hospice referral is for additional support and back-up at home. The Home Care team liaise closely with the hospice doctors, the patient's GP, hospital consultant and district nurse.

Day Care

Day Care is available for 4 days a week from 10.00am to 3.00pm. Transport can be provided for patients to and from their homes by volunteer drivers, although many patients prefer to make their own arrangements.

Attendance is co-ordinated by the Home Care Team and the Day Care Manager. Day Care enables patients to meet new people - other patients and hospice staff - and to give carers a day of respite. The Day Care service is staffed by a nursing sister, two staff nurses and a team of volunteers.

The day is intended to provide stimulation and enjoyment and there are opportunities to participate in activities, therapies and entertainment. Musical concerts and outings are arranged on a regular basis. Other volunteers provide aromatherapy, hairdressing and manicures. Refreshments are provided throughout the day, including lunch.

In-patient Care

All patients admitted to our 14-bedded unit have their own room with bathroom en suite, a private patio and a pleasant outlook over the gardens surrounding the Hospice.

Family and friends, including children may visit at any time, and there are facilities for relatives and friends to stay overnight if necessary. Pets are also welcome as visitors.

The atmosphere is relaxed, comfortable and peaceful with excellent medical and nursing care. Staff have plenty of time to spend with patients and relatives, who are encouraged to discuss any worries or difficulties they may have.

Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy

Pastoral Care

Our Pastoral Care Sister, and Chaplains of all denominations are on hand to offer spiritual support, and a daily interdenominational service is held in the chapel for anyone wishing to attend.
