FOUNDATION IN PALLIATIVE CARE
16th April, 9th May & 14th May 2008
St Raphael’s Hospice is pleased to offer the above course. This 3-day course offers an introduction to the basic principles and symptom management to those wishing to learn, update or simply develop their existing approach to caring for terminally ill patients. The principles learnt can be applied to all dying patients regardless of diagnosis and will therefore be of interest to all professionals working in this care setting including Practice Nurses, Care Home Nurses, Voluntary Sitters, Community HCAs and those working in the acute sector, and Social Care Carers.
The programme will be delivered by experts in this field and will be interactive and participative. This is to enhance understanding of challenging issues within the reality of practice and allow more meaningful learning.
The study programme will enable the participant to -
- Gain insight and knowledge in the principles of palliative care
- Develop enhanced skills in communicating with dying patients
- Develop skills in assessment and management of pain and other distressing symptoms
- Develop confidence in addressing spiritual issues associated with inevitable grief and loss.
- Plan patient care in advance and reduce potential problems
Learning Outcomes will equip the participant to better able to -
- Discuss the key principles and philosophy of palliative and terminal care across the spectrum of illness.
- Demonstrate an effective approach to pain and symptom management.
- Explain the terms ‘loss’ and ‘grief’ and impact on patient and family.
- Outline the key elements to enhancing communication skills.
Develop a greater understanding of ethical management of clients at the end of life. - Work toward the recommended protocols/tools of GSF, LCP and PPC.
The programme is designed to be flexible. The cost is –
- 1 day including sandwich lunch at £40 or
- All 3 days including sandwich lunch at £110.
A certificate of attendance will be issued.
This 3-day programme is RCN Accredited.
