St Raphael's Hospice (SRH), has been working across Merton and Sutton for over 30 years. The Hospice has been through a great deal of change in the last few years and is now entering a new, exciting phase. It is currently part of a large charity, the Congregation of the Daughter of the Cross of Liege, but is working towards becoming an independent. stand-alone charity, in the next few months. Our clinical action plan has set out an innovative way of working to deliver a high quality patient focuses service, within our resources and capacity.

The Hospice provides a range of specialist palliative care services to our local community in Merton and Sutton, a populations of just over 400,000. A dedicated staff of 135 (plus around 40 bank staff) is supported by over 800 volunteers, based at the Hospice site, our fund-raising office and our 11 retail sites around the boroughs.

The current medical team consists of a specialty doctor, a part-time specialty doctor (0.2 ETE), an StR and a rotational GPVTS placement every three months, together with our three locum consultants (1.8 WTE). We are recruiting to increase our consultants posts to 2.4 WTE to enhance our responsive, accessible and flexible service delivery.

In line with national recommendations the job plan for this post comprises 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), each of 4 hours. 8 of these are for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for Revalidation/CPD and 1 SPA for service development and teaching. On call requirement will be paid as per the NHS terms and conditions. There is an opportunity to undertake a PA of DCC as an honorary Consultant supporting the Palliative Care Team in St Helier’s Hospital (SHH) on a Tuesday morning. In the future there may be further opportunities to work more closely with our palliative care colleagues at SHH. *This is an indicative programme and the actual SPA allocation will be subject to review and be dependent on responsibilities and service development.

The post holder will based primarily at St Raphael’s Hospice, however it is a requirement of your employment that you are prepared to work at any additional or different locations to support the demands of our service. It is envisaged that the working day will be from 09.00 to 17.30 (8.5hrs) with a 30 minute (8.00hrs) allocation for lunch. The Hospice is willing to be flexible around start and finish times in line with service requirements. The post holder will be employed by St Raphael’s Hospice.

This role is offered as a 10PA position, on the NHS consultant pay scale, annual leave will be allocated according to completed years service as a Consultant, training and development opportunities, discount in all of our shops and our Orangery Cafe, Employee Assistance Programme, continuation of NHS Pension scheme for selected clinical roles, free eye test and Staff Pilates classes.
