This year marks my 25th year as a Registered Nurse and my second at St Raphael’s. Palliative care nursing at St Raphael’s is incredibly special. We look at patients individually, take time to learn about who they are and their individual needs. We honour the small things. A holding hand, a listening ear. Every moment is important. It’s holistic in terms of the support we provide.
My shift begins with a handover from the day team, then catching up with my night colleagues. I then visit every patient with a friendly hello, to find out how they are feeling and offer comfort in small but meaningful ways – fluffing pillows, sharing a quiet moment, or simply being there to listen. Many patients are surrounded by precious keepsakes from home – photos, cards, sometimes even a beloved pet resting nearby.
The evening brings its own set of challenges. Many families have left and patients rely heavily on the nurses through the night. We prepare for medication rounds and ensure everyone’s needs are met. Out of hours calls ring through the night for help and advice, from patients in the community, district nurses and ambulance services. Having a great team to support you makes a world of difference.
To be at a patient’s bedside during their last breath – and to know their favourite music was played – is a privilege. The night shift allows me to have the best of my own family in the day and be the best for our patients at night.
Sponsor a Nurse
By sponsoring a St Raphael’s nurse today, you will help me and my fellow nurses make sure that more people live the fullest life they can, until the end. Even a small monthly gift today will help us to make a positive impact for people in your local community for months or years to come.
