Volunteers Week: 3 - 9 June 2024

Volunteers' Week celebrates the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK. St Raphael's has a family of over 500 volunteers who gave 51,321 hours of support between 2022-23 which is a contribution of £716,000. Without them, we simply would not be able to care for our community in Merton and Sutton.

From receptionists to van drivers, our volunteers contribute across the whole Hospice and we would like to highlight just a handful of our wonderful teams.

Gardeners

“The gardening volunteers are an invaluable asset to the Hospice. Their enthusiasm and willingness to go above and beyond is reflected in our gardens, which are full of colour and wildlife. This is all with thanks to the volunteers who give up their own time each week to tend to the flowers and plants across the grounds. We receive many compliments, particularly from patients, their families and friends, about how beautiful the gardens look. Thank you to all the volunteers who have helped make the Hospice so lovely, we are extremely grateful for all you do.”

Pete, Lead Gardener

Wellbeing

“I have been attending the Wellbeing Centre for a year and a half which has been a wonderful tonic for me – it has helped me mentally and in turn has helped me physically too. The volunteers are always so thoughtful and helpful. What they do is amazing which I always tell them! They have helped me make amazing friends which I could not be without.”

Ward Companions

“The Ward Companions bring so much joy and happiness to patients and their loved ones. During our time on the ward, we have been regularly visited by the volunteers sharing conversation, laughs and quality time. They really give my partner a lift! Where would we be without these volunteers, we are all so lucky to have them.”
