Our expert team may refer you to be admitted as an in-patient to help with managing your pain or symptom control. Many people find that a relatively short period of inpatient care makes a real difference to how they are feeling and enables them to return home feeling more comfortable.

As an inpatient, you'll be surrounded by a team of dedicated staff and volunteers whose expertise and support will be available to you, and your family, whenever you need it, 24 hours a day. We can help with the physical, emotional, social or spiritual impact of your illness and we're here at every stage to help you make decisions about your care.

Our Inpatient Unit has been designed to give you comfort, privacy and the space to have visitors. There is no set routine – you can stay in the privacy of your room or relax in the Orangery Café and gardens. We encourage you to treat the Inpatient Unit as you would your own home.

Each of the inpatient rooms have an en-suite shower and access to the patio and our lovely gardens. You can enjoy nature in comfort watching the plants, birds and squirrels from your room or get amongst them in the privacy of the garden. Each room has a white board which we encourage you and your family/friends to write on to tell us what is important to you.

Visiting hours

There are no visiting hours, your family and friends are welcome at any time, day or night. Additional beds can be set up in your room for family and friends that wish to stay the night with you. We also have a family room which can be used for overnight accommodation.

We welcome well behaved pets but would ask that you speak to the nurse in charge before bringing them in.

For the current COVID-19 restrictions, please see Guidance on visiting the Hospice.

Meals

As an in-patient you can eat what you want, when you want – we offer a range of meals, snacks and drinks and can cater for any special dietary requirements.

Breakfast is served from 08.00

Lunch is served from 12.30

Supper is served from 17.30

Returning home

Around 30% of our inpatients come for a short stay and then return home. We have just 14 beds and demand for them is high, which means we cannot be a permanent alternative to care in your own home, care home or nursing home.

If your symptoms are well managed but it would be difficult for you to go back to your own home, we will help you and your family and friends to find other places where you can continue your care.
