Sharing Our Story on BBC Politics London

We are proud to have featured on BBC Politics London on Sunday 15 February, highlighting the vital care we provide to patients in our community.

The programme explored the ongoing funding challenges facing St Raphael’s and the wider hospice sector across the UK. It also featured a compelling testimony from a patient and her family, who shared their experiences of being cared for on our ward and spoke movingly about what that support has meant to them.

Becca Trower, CEO and Clinical Director, spoke to the BBC about the financial pressures on the Hospice at a time when demand for our services has seen a 20 per cent increase.

Becca said “I think if nothing changes, if we don’t have these funding issues addressed, it will mean that we will have to cut services again or to close hospices.  And it feels very counterintuitive that we’re cutting services and yet we know that within the next 20 years there’ll be another 25% of people needing end of life care. ”

Each year St Raphael’s provides care and support to over 1,000 people in Merton and Sutton, completely free of charge. It costs nearly £6.5 million a year to run our services, however we only receive around 25% of funding from the NHS. The majority of our funding comes from dedicated and generous donations from our local community.

We are incredibly grateful to BBC Politics London for helping raise awareness of hospice care.
