Illa has been an avid volunteer for more than 27 years. After moving to Sutton, she joined the St Raphael’s family over three years ago and volunteers her time at our Donation Centre:

I used to enjoy helping on the PTA at my children’s school and organised many of their jumble sales. That experience came in handy here at St Raphael’s, where I now help sort through all the donated items behind the scenes at the Donation Centre.

Charity work means a lot to me. I have always looked for ways to give back and have volunteered at several charities over the years. One of my favourite memories is hiking through Chile with my husband to raise money for a cause close to our hearts.

Now at 75, I still find volunteering so fulfilling. It keeps me mentally active, gives me something meaningful to focus on, and I really enjoy the company and conversations. I’d much rather be here helping at the Donation Centre than at home the whole day, where I’d only be focused on cooking or cleaning.

During the pandemic, I contacted the Volunteer Centre in Sutton to find out how I could support a local cause. They introduced me to St Raphael’s, and the team made it all so easy – I filled out a simple form online and got started right away. I’ve been volunteering here ever since.

Everyone is so kind – the volunteers and staff are brilliant. I spend my time in the back of the Donation Centre, sorting through pre-loved items, making sure everything is organised, priced and ready for the shop floor. It’s satisfying to know that it all helps supports such an important cause in our community.

I’ve also made wonderful friends here, and we enjoy social evenings together. Just last weekend we had a housewarming at a fellow volunteer’s new flat. We all came together and had such a lovely time.

If someone is thinking about volunteering, I’d say absolutely go for it. If you’re feeling lonely or just want to meet people and make a difference, this is a great way to do it. There really is a place for everyone, whatever your age or ability.

When you walk into a charity shop, you might not realise how much work happens behind the scenes. Every item that’s sorted, prepared, and sold plays a part in supporting the Hospice. It’s all part of something bigger – and it feels so special to be part of that.
