Who is responsible for the decision around whether I'll have CPR? Expand All decisions about CPR are made on an individual basis. You are entitled to decline CPR even if your doctor recommends it. If you're a patient on our ward the medical consultant caring for you has ultimate responsibility for the decision on whether CPR should be attempted. If you're at home, the decision will be made by your GP. If your consultant or GP thinks you're in the final stage of life and are likely to die soon, in which case there is no chance of CPR working, they and the team looking after you will make sure a decision not to attempt CPR is made. If you're well enough to have a conversation about this, they'll explain this to you. If not, they'll speak with your family and carers about what’s best for you. It's often helpful to consider CPR decisions at a time when you're still well. You may want to involve someone close to you in this discussion or you may wish for them to make the decision on your behalf.
Are there any side effects or complications after CPR? Expand There can be. The process of CPR can sometimes cause broken ribs or internal bleeding. Anyone who is successfully revived will remain unwell and need more treatment, usually in a specialist coronary care or intensive care unit. If you have a cardiopulmonary arrest with a pre-existing medical problem it is unlikely you will make a full recovery. In general, most people never recover to the same level of physical or mental health as before a cardiopulmonary arrest.
How successful is CPR? Expand Success rates depend on the reason the heart and breathing stopped. CPR is most effective on people who were otherwise well and who have a type of heart rhythm disturbance that responds to an electric shock. Research has shown that those with life-limiting conditions almost never recover from attempts to restart their heart and results are best if the event occurs in hospital. If CPR is particularly relevant to your care, or you are concerned to have full CPR facilities available, it may be more appropriate for you to be cared for in a hospital rather than the Hospice. St Raphael’s offers only limited CPR facilities.
What is cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)? Expand When a person's heart and breathing stops (cardiopulmonary arrest), it’s sometimes possible to restart their heart and breathing with an emergency treatment called cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

What about my Will? Expand Everyone is encouraged to make a Will and keep it up-to-date. This need not be complicated or costly. A Will is not just for people with property, it is a helpful legal document that will let your relatives and friends know your wishes on your death. Your Will appoints an executor to ensure that your wishes are carried out. Your executor and your next of kin can be the same person or different people. If they are different people bear in mind that it will be the executor who takes control of your possessions and is empowered to arrange your funeral. If you die without a Will, UK law decides who will inherit all that you own and this may not be the people you would have chosen. The set legal approach for distributing your estate in this event does not currently recognise unmarried partners or non-civil partnerships.
What are the responsibilities of my next of kin? Expand When someone dies at the Hospice the next of kin is the person to whom the Hospice will hand over any property or valuables. The next of kin will normally be the person who registers a death and organises the funeral, they may, of course, ask family members or friends to help. We suggest that you inform the person you wish to nominate and explain the responsibilities that they might be expected to take on.
Why does the Hospice want to know about my next of kin? Expand We need to know who you would like us to keep informed about your care and get in touch with if there is an emergency. You may also wish to provide us with contact details for other people that you would like us to keep informed, such as children and close friends. We are happy to meet and support whoever you give us permission to speak to. We will not divulge medical or personal information to anyone without your consent.

What can a next of kin do? Expand Your next of kin cannot consent or refuse consent to treatment on your behalf but if you are unable to communicate they can let doctors know what decisions they believe you would make if you were able to. A next of kin has no legal liabilities or rights to your medical notes or personal possessions. Nominating a next of kin does not affect who will inherit from you.
